Gift Idea | Holiday Chex Mix

by Casey B on 12/18/2013

This year Scott and I wanted to do something a little different for all our close friends and family at Christmas. Everyone always goes out and spends tons on TVs, Kuerig Machines, Gift Cards, etc. We wanted to do something that was a bit more from the heart. So to accompany the gifts we are giving out this year, we thought it would be fun to do our own Chex Mix in decorative mason jars.

Below I am going to show you how you can make your very own Chex Mix Christmas Gift for your friends or family. It also makes a great gift for teachers, coaches, personal trainers, co-workers, bosses and anyone else on your Christmas list! We spent $40.00 and ended up with seven large mason jars to give away as gifts! Perfect for those of us who have a long list of loved ones to buy for ;)

1/4 Cup of Butter
4 tsp Worchestershire Sauce
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
1 tsp Chili Powder
(or any seasoning of your choice)
1/4 tsp Sugar
Chex Cereal
Your favourite Cereal
Goldfish Crackers
Mixed Nuts

You will also need a crock pot, mason jars and some decorative ribbon!

The first step is to set your crock pot to its 'Low' Setting and to add your Chex cereal, mixed nuts, pretzels, and any of the other goodies you'd like in your Chex Mix.

Now that you have your mix warming up, you want to prepare the topping for it. This can consist of any flavouring you want to use. We chose to use Chili flavouring but you can use bbq, dill pickle, salt and vinegar, the list goes on!

To begin your topping, melt 1/4 cup of your butter and add 4 tsp of Worchestershire Sauce. Then blend the salt, sugar, garlic and onion powders and your flavouring powder. Stir well.

Once your topping has been blended, you can pour it over your Chex Mix. After every layer, be sure to stir the mix so it gets covered evenly. Once coated, cover your Chex Mix and continue to warm on 'Low' heat for 2.5 hours. Be sure to stir your mix every 30 minutes!

Once your Chex Mix has warmed for 2.5 hours, remove it from heat and let it cool for at least 30 minutes prior to bottling. Once cooled, you can put the mix into glass mason jars and add some cute holiday ribbon for decoration!
Tie the ribbon around the neck of the mason jar. Use the length of your forearm to determine how long it should be.

Next you can use a pair of scissors against the grain of the ribbon to make the ribbon frilly and a little more decorative looking. You can decide how tight or loose you want the curls by going over them several times to make them tighter.

Once complete, your Chex Mix is all ready to go! To give this as a gift, just add it to a gift basket! Add some cheeses, wines or favourite holiday alcohol. No wrapping required!
